Gov. Brad Little declared Flood Awareness Week from March 16th to 22nd as the Idaho Office of Emergency Management warned that spring snowmelt and seasonal rains are increasing flood risks.
The office reminded residents that floods can happen suddenly and have caused costly damage in previous years.
Post Falls Superintendent Dena Naccarato explained at the American Legion how the district loses $20,976 a day when 456 students miss school—just 92.6% attendance leads to a 7.4% funding loss that forces the district to spend extra on costs like buying a new truck every two days.
The district will ask voters on May 20 to renew its two-year $5,958,551 levy while detailing challenges under Idaho Code.
The Idaho Senate approved a property tax relief bill yesterday that adds $50 million to a School Facilities Fund and $50 million to a Tax Relief Fund for owner-occupied homes to lower tax bills.
The bill now moves to the governor and brings total tax relief passed this session to over $400 million.
On Monday, the Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee set Medicaid budgets largely matching the governor's request—allocating nearly $674.2 million for enhancement funds for next fiscal year and over $415.2 million in supplemental funds for the current fiscal year to support health insurance assistance for about 262,000 Idahoans. The committee's actions create a budget bill that must pass both the House and Senate and avoid a governor's veto.
Governor Brad Little declared a state disaster after heavy rainfall and early spring runoff damaged culverts and flood gates near Dudley, risking flooding that may affect roads, homes and farms in Kootenai County.
State and federal agencies including the Idaho Office of Emergency Management & U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working to stabilize the area while residents are urged to remain alert.
Idaho budget writers approved the largest budget this year on Monday and set aside $674 million for Medicaid enhancements while expecting a net savings of $15.9 million from House Bill 345 (the Medicaid reform law); the budget now awaits the governor’s signature for fiscal year 2026.
