- ➤ Mary Kerr said her son Jake—who has mental and intellectual disabilities—has built a strong network of friends through Special Olympics Idaho after moving to Coeur d’Alene eight years ago. He will compete in the Northern Summer Regionals for basketball in Moscow in May as Special Olympics Idaho raises funds and gathers volunteers for upcoming events. Coeur d'Alene Press
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ River City Middle School students in the Titan leadership team began their day cleaning trash on their walk to the Boys and Girls Club in Post Falls—where they participated in team-building exercises that focused on empathy and inclusion. - ➤ Lakes math teacher Marcus Ross traveled to Los Angeles in early April to receive a $25,000 prize as the Milken Educator Award winner at UCLA—he said the honor showed his hard work was worth it. - ➤ John Schwandt, a Coeur d'Alene resident since 1976, worked in forestry for over 60 years, starting with the Idaho Department of Lands and later with the U.S. Forest Service where he helped create a tree hazard rating system. He led the National Whitebark Pine Restoration program, earned awards for his work, and volunteers on the local urban forestry board to support community environmental stewardship. - ➤ On May 5, a memorial will honor the 10th anniversary of Sgt. Moore’s death after he was fatally shot while on patrol near Prairie Avenue and Atlas Road in 2015. The Coeur d'Alene Police Department will hold a private graveside service at 8:30 a.m.—followed by a procession from Forest Cemetery to McEuen Park where community members may join.
