Good morning, Post Falls.
🏘️ Community
Post Falls city employees will spruce up Rick Noordam Community Garden at 1115 Third Ave. (across from Black Bay Park) on Saturday, May 17.
They will clean garden beds, remove weeds and prepare the space for future development while creating a demonstration garden for new gardeners.
🎭 Culture
Last Wednesday, Museum of North Idaho received a letter stating that NEH withdrew a $500,000 federal matching funds offer for its Moving History Forward project—museum staff said the loss may delay the planned phase two expansion, which will add 4,000 square feet of exhibit space if the needed funds are raised. The board will regroup to decide next steps and may adjust construction plans scheduled for 2028.
🎓 Education
At the Farm to Table event held Wednesday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds, fifth graders learned that one bushel of wheat holds about one million kernels, weighs 60 pounds, and makes 42 pounds of flour for bread or pasta—student Ethan Barney worked to grind as many kernels as he could while Gabriel Woodes helped run the machine during the tenth annual field trip.
🌲 Environment
Idaho’s Department of Environmental Quality is conducting a thorough study at over 30 beaches along Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River to test for lead and arsenic from past mining runoff—this project, funded by Governor Brad Little's office and recommended by a 2022 report, aims to update data on public health risks for children.
🏛️ Government
The Idaho Transportation Department announced a statewide seatbelt campaign that will run from May 18 through June 1 — a reminder that drivers must buckle up.
Data from last year shows over half of those killed in Idaho crashes were unbelted — highlighting the need for improved safety measures.
