COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Art and Flow Studio is hosting a free event — Healing Heroes: Memorial Paint Night — for veterans, active-duty military and their families at the Post Falls American Legion, 1138 E. Poleline Ave., on Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; participants will paint a patriotic landscape with pre-drawn canvases and step-by-step guidance in honor of Memorial Day.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Post Falls Police are asking residents to review security footage — a hit-and-run collision at West Poleline Avenue and North Idaho Road on Saturday at 10:45 p.m. injured a man on an electric dirt bike after the driver fled, and investigators have not yet identified a person of interest as of Tuesday at 6 p.m.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Kootenai County gave nearly 69% support by 8:45 p.m. May 20 for Post Falls School District’s supplemental levy, which, if it passes, will fund athletics and school safety with nearly $6 million per year for two years while replacing a $12 million levy. Officials will certify the votes on May 30.  KXLY
  • On May 20, voters in Kootenai and Bonner Counties backed Lakeland School District’s $7.5M levy with 82.9% approval — replacing the current levy set to expire in June and funding extracurricular activities, safety programs, and student transportation. Votes will be counted until May 30 — and a levy for Post Falls School District on Tuesday also appeared to be passing.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • May 20 results show that the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department’s proposed $16 million bond measure passed with 74.4% of votes, exceeding the two-thirds majority needed. If approved, the bond will provide $16,400,000 over 10 years to help manage increased service calls while raising annual taxes by about $70 for a $425,000 home (current estimates).  KXLY
  • The Spirit Lake Fire Protection District override levy is on track to pass after 67.7% of voters in Kootenai and Bonner counties approved the temporary $477,000 increase by 11 p.m. May 20th—officials said it will raise property tax rates from $50.83 to about $75.49 per $100,000 of assessed value and fund staffing, operations, maintenance and new equipment, with votes to be certified May 30th.  KXLY
  • Idaho will implement new DMV laws this summer. Starting in July, drivers can choose between a free teal license plate or a $70 black design—residents can now use passports as proof of identity, license plate readers are limited to law enforcement, the front plate requirement is removed, and optional emergency contacts and staff background checks are added.  KXLY
