CRIME NEWS

  • Mark A. Bruzas, 34, of Spokane Valley pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter for the 2023 crash that killed Coeur d’Alene resident Donald Phelan and today received a sentence of 60 days in jail, 100 hours of community service — to be completed through a drunk driving prevention program — and five years of probation with parole eligibility after four years following the victim’s family forgiveness.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Donovan James Erickson, a 31-year-old with a record of past convictions, was sentenced to 10 years in prison with parole eligibility after three years for drug charges in Kootenai County on June 2—he was convicted of possessing cocaine with intent to deliver and resisting officers.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Idaho Department of Education said free meals will be offered in three Post Falls schools—Ponderosa Elementary, Post Falls Middle, and Seltice Elementary—from Monday through Friday from June 18 until August 15, where students aged 1 to 18 can get a healthy meal on-site. This program is part of the federal Summer Food Service Program, which served over 900,000 meals last year and has no income restrictions.  KXLY
  • In May, River City Middle School’s Titan Leadership Team focused on stress management by leading exercises, games and lessons while teacher Janey Ortega organized a schoolwide wellness afternoon (featuring outdoor activities and a celebration of test work) that gave students new ways to manage stress.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Eight graduates of Project SEARCH’s Class of 2025 celebrated their ceremony on Tuesday at Kootenai Health where they presented their capstone projects and received awards for job offers from Home Depot, Big Blue, Ross Dress for Less, and Kootenai Health. The program—an effort by Kootenai Health, the Idaho Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and the school district—helped the students develop work skills through internships and welcomed next year’s interns.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Post Falls City Council approved awarding Big Sky Idaho Corporation $125,919 for a waterline extension that will run from the Centennial Trail to Lundy Boulevard—this project will add a new fire hydrant and future connection point while limiting road closures to one lane, with construction set to begin later this season and last about three weeks.  Coeur d'Alene Press

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Post Falls City Council approved the construction improvement agreement Tuesday night, letting Mayor Ron Jacobson sign with Medalist Development for phase one of a 148-lot subdivision north of Crown Pointe near Hayden Avenue— the city will also fund roadway and sewer upgrades along Bodine Avenue to support the project.  Coeur d'Alene Press
