A free community celebration is planned at Underhill Park—organizers will offer family-friendly activities for local residents.
On July 27, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue and Coeur d'Alene Fire Department hosted the Community Rises benefit at Stateline Speedway (1349 N.
Beck Road) to honor firefighters wounded and killed in the June 29 ambush; Mark Peterson emceed the event featuring a concert and auction with proceeds supporting the firefighters' families.
A local community event raised funds to help firefighters' families with living expenses and other urgent needs, showing strong neighbor support.
Kootenai County residents will join National Night Out on August 5 at McIntire Family Park in Hayden as the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office leads the event.
The event will run from 4 p.m. — 8 p.m. and offer free food, drinks, music, kids' activities and live K-9, dive, sonar and fire demonstrations.
Around 3 a.m. Saturday, a man driving a blue 1997 Ford Explorer in Rathdrum left Highway 53’s shoulder and crashed into trees—he was ejected from the car, CPR was performed but he died at the scene, and the road was blocked for about 2.5 hours during the investigation.
The University of Idaho and North Idaho College are launching Idaho’s only Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering to train students for modern mining jobs—students can start this fall at NIC or follow a four-year path through UI.
The new program has been developed with local mining companies to meet workforce needs as regional mines prepare to reopen.
Vanessa Gunter, an Idaho student in the WWAMI program, will be studying in Rathdrum until Aug.
15 as part of the University of Washington School of Medicine’s four-week Rural Underserved Opportunities Program—she is one of 21 students set to visit 17 communities. Her early experience caring for her younger brother, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was 5, has inspired her goal of becoming a doctor.
