The North Idaho community is rallying around wildfire victims near Athol as the Sunset Fire continues to burn over 3,000 acres near Lake Pend Oreille—Rick Kasten and Isabel DaSilva lost their home and belongings and have received over $8,000 in donations as they plan their next steps.

On Monday, kids learned archery at the Idaho Fish and Game youth exhibit at the North Idaho State Fair, where many aimed bows and arrows for the first time—this 10-day event will continue through Sunday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.

Today, Idaho superintendent Debbie Critchfield said that civics education remains a vital part of schooling as her department proposes new standards that include a full year of instruction plus a two-semester high school course.

The changes will soon be reviewed by the State Board of Education and the legislature to help students build essential citizenship skills — civics.

Hotter and drier weather will make it harder for over 400 firefighters to control the Sunset fire burning across more than 3,200 acres along Lake Pend Oreille, as temperatures are expected to rise from the mid-80s today to the 90s by the weekend—dry brush and high winds may spread the flames further. Residents face Level 3 evacuations from Crosswhite Road to Talache Road and can seek shelter at an evacuation center set up at Cocolalla Bible Camp.
