- ➤ Hope 4 Kids Hygiene Drive, a partnership with Numerica Credit Union and Project Beauty Share, will deliver essential hygiene products to eight school districts including Mead (which often runs low on supplies) to ensure students start school with dignity through October 5. New, unused items can be donated at Numerica Credit Union locations (supporting local students’ needs) while monetary contributions are also welcomed. KXLY

- ➤ 70-year-old firefighter J. Hank Hester from Priest River died on Monday while fighting the Dragon Bravo Fire at Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona—he was removing hazard trees when he suffered a cardiac emergency at the scene. KXLY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wednesday evening, more than 200 Idahoans met at Lake City Center in Coeur d'Alene to discuss the Parental Choice Tax Credit that uses taxpayer money for private school tuition. A Post Falls event will be held on Saturday at Post Falls High School to debate the policy — local educators and community members will share their views on how the change may affect public schools. - ➤ Today, at the annual CHS 50+ Reunion, organizers passed a commemorative 1910 brick from the old Coeur d'Alene High School building on 7th and Montana to next year's CHS '71 group (CHS '70 president Tim Shepperd handed the brick to David Moseley, Tracie Olin, and Jan Ingalls Moseley). - ➤ State superintendent expressed concern about math test scores and said the department will review data—officials plan new support measures—and work with schools to help struggling students. KXLY
- ➤ Coeur d’Alene School District said they are following Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s June 30 opinion on HB41 that questions signs like “Everyone is welcome here” in schools. The district said the Idaho Department of Education does not view the sign as political and will support staff in showing every student is valued—while some local educators have raised concerns about the guidance. - ➤ Idaho Fish and Game warned that chronic wasting disease is threatening deer, elk and moose populations across the state and putting hunting traditions at risk. The agency said that free voluntary testing will be offered statewide as part of a testing drive that will begin Monday — mandatory testing is required in seven hunting units. KHQ
- ➤ According to NOAA and a July analysis, nearly 80% of the Northwest is in drought this summer—more than half of the region is facing severe and extreme conditions from low spring rain, with states like Oregon and Idaho experiencing record low streamflows and rising wildfire risks. - ➤ The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality said that most Lake Coeur d'Alene beaches were safe for swimming and family recreation after testing over 30 sites for metal contaminants. Some areas near old mining sites showed higher metal levels — so those locations are marked for caution. KXLY

- ➤ A study by the Idaho Community Foundation shows that over $4 billion will pass through wills and estates in Kootenai County over the next decade, and the foundation is launching the Dream Big for Idaho campaign—urging citizens to set aside part of their estates for local philanthropy.
