COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Croquet Garden Party will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Roosevelt Inn on E. Wallace Ave to benefit HomeShare Kootenai County with a croquet tournament, live music & catered food and tours of the historic 1905 building that once housed the Roosevelt School. • Maddie's Place received a $500,000 donation—the funds will expand its services for local children and families. The organization said the money will support new programs and facility improvements.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several outstanding Kootenai County high school seniors were named National Merit semifinalists today, earning spots among 16,000 nationwide contenders — Lakeland High School’s Liliana Hernandez, North Idaho STEM Charter Academy’s Konner Knoll and Cohen MacLeod, and Coeur d’Alene schools saw their hard work recognized — as officials prepare for the next stage of selection.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Hayden will be able to travel as far north as Lancaster on Ramsey Road starting Oct. 6 after a ceremonial ribbon cutting marked the end of a 15-year expansion process. City officials said the project came in under a $14 million budget and leftover funds will be used for future transportation improvements.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Local editorials urge voters to attend forums hosted by groups like North Idaho Building Contractors Association and League of Women Voters to hear from candidates for city council, mayor, school board and other local offices before the Nov. 4 election. The forums, scheduled for Oct. 2, Oct. 5 and other dates, will let voters ask questions and learn what candidates plan to do—helping ensure informed choices at the ballot box.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • After federal guidelines halted work in February, Idaho Transportation Department submitted its NEVI plan on Sept 10 to resume the electric vehicle charging network project. The working group will reconvene — if approved — to plan the project’s next steps.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Four Idaho judicial leaders were honored this month for their dedication to fair and timely justice. The honored individuals include Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Meyer, Judge Darren Simpson, trial court administrator Tammie Whyte, and Magistrate Judge Andrew Ellis—each recognized with awards for excellence and leadership.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • A new Idaho law, known as the report and hold law, empowers banks, credit unions — and other financial institutions to place temporary holds on transactions they suspect are scams. The law gives law enforcement extra time to investigate and stop financial losses for seniors and vulnerable groups.  KHQ
  • Mayor Curt Jernigan proposed a four-way stop at Wilbur Avenue and Fourth Street in Dalton Gardens to slow speeding near Dalton Elementary School. City Council will review the plan at 6 tonight—officials are waiting for feedback from local engineers and attorneys on whether a new traffic study is needed.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • County commissioners say the sheriff’s helicopter program may end if new insurance estimates of $46,000 to $53,000 push costs far above the current $10,000 contribution—ABLE1, a 1994 BELL 206, has not flown for law enforcement since September 12. Officials noted that the nonprofit partner will not cover any extra insurance costs, putting the pilot program at risk.  Coeur d'Alene Press
