COMMUNITY NEWS

  • From October 17 to 19, families will shop at the Just Between Friends sale at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds—items like kids' clothes, toys, books will be 50—90% off while first-time moms receive early access on Thursday. Public shopping hours are set for Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with admission at $3 and cash only.  KXLY
  • Dalton Elementary’s staff lounge was remodeled by CDA Church of the Nazarene—donating $4,000 and volunteering 250 hours to update the dated room with new furniture, a refrigerator, soft lighting and a mural spanning 28 feet inspired by Canfield Mountain. CULTURE NEWS

  • Two university professors from the Inland Northwest and another Idaho writer have been named $5,000 literature fellowship winners by the Idaho Commission on the Arts. The awards (given by out-of-state judges) are made every two years (recognizing outstanding artistic work).  KXLY
  • Silverwood Theme Park will open its 16th season of Scarywood Haunted Nights on Friday with new features like FrightLight Necklaces that lessen monster scares—attractions such as The Swine—Bigger and Badder, Chuckles 3D Sideshow, Planet Zombie, Blood Bayou and Pharaoh's Curse bring both returning and new thrills.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • About 30 students and family members gathered outside Post Falls High School Tuesday morning to protest disciplinary actions taken after a concerning photo of football players with an airsoft gun surfaced. They argued that a one-year sports suspension was too harsh — suggesting alternatives like limited suspensions and community service as fairer punishments.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Rathdrum — Lakeland School District is competing for $1 million as a finalist in T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights competition where voters will decide the winner by Oct.24. The funds would transform the football stadium and weight room to boost school facilities.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Randy Neal, a longtime mechanic with the Post Falls Highway District, is retiring this month after 37 years of service. He said his work changed from fixing gravel roads to using modern technology—showing the value of keeping equipment well maintained.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Hayden resident Constance Walters was saddened to see many trees along I-90 cut down as the Idaho Transportation Department removed trees in its right-of-way to expand the highway and address safety risks. The department said some trees near the Huetter rest area will be saved and the timber sold locally to support the project.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Kootenai County is celebrating its first group of Veterans Treatment Court graduates from a program started last year to help veterans with challenges in the justice system. The public ceremony will be held at the county courthouse on October 14 at 3 p.m.  KHQ
  • The Idaho Department of Lands received a $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Forest Service for the Shoshone I-90 Hazardous Fuels Project — a plan to reduce wildfire risk in the Silver Valley by treating 18,890 acres of high-risk forestland benefiting 13 communities. The project will begin early spring and finish by the end of 2030.  KHQ

  • The Coeur d’Alene Resort will host its seventh annual Whiskey Barrel Weekend on Oct 3–4 with lakeside tastings, live music and special events for whiskey lovers.
