COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members gathered Thursday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds for the 11th annual Souport the End of Homelessness benefit to raise funds for the warming center in Post Falls — which now opens at 33 degrees and provides shelter, blankets, and sleeping bags for those in need. Local residents, including employees from Watkins Distributing and local chefs, sampled 25 soup varieties as the event aimed to raise about $20,000–$25,000.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CRIME NEWS

  • A hunter fired four rounds in self-defense after a grizzly bear charged him near the Canadian border on state land in Boundary County, and he was uninjured — the sheriff's office warns that an injured bear may still be roaming near the junction of U.S. 95 and Highway 1.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The North Idaho Music Teachers Association will celebrate its 25th anniversary from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Music Conservatory of Coeur d’Alene — a free event in honor of National Arts and Humanities Month – and will bring together students, alumni, and teachers for live performances and reflections on music education.   • Voices and Votes: Democracy in America is a Smithsonian traveling exhibition open at the Museum of North Idaho and the Coeur d’Alene Public Library from Oct. 11 through Nov. 29—showcasing interactive displays and artifacts that detail how citizens have shaped American democracy—arranged with the help of the Idaho Humanities Council.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • More than 60 community members gathered at the Best Western Plus Coeur d’Alene Inn Wednesday night to learn about Idaho’s new $50 million tax credit program that helps cover private and home school costs. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews will begin work on the Pack River delta habitat restoration in late October or early November—building three new islands above the summer lake level to restore habitat for fish and wildlife while drivers on Sunnyside Road will see signage but no road closures.  Coeur d'Alene Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials have announced plans to widen the turn lane on HWY 95—aiming to ease congestion for drivers. The project is set to move forward over the coming months.  KXLY

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Cruisers Bar and Grill (6105 W. Seltice Way, State Line Village) is hosting the free Mrs. Roper Romp on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. for guests aged 21 and older; attendees will wear their best wigs, beads, and muumuus to vie for prizes and join a group photo at 4 p.m. while enjoying food, beverages, and DJ music.  Coeur d'Alene Press
