Good morning, Post Falls. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 18th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Women who completed the Pathways to Prosperity program joined a cooking class at the Kroc Center Thursday evening to learn how to prepare healthy meals on a tight budget and received Instant Pots. The class was led by chef Michele Dirks and backed by local groups (North Idaho College's Center for New Directions, Charity Reimagined, and Press Christmas for All) to help single moms cook faster and save money.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Families of University of Idaho murder victims Madison “Maddie” Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves placed their ashes in memorial urns at a Coeur d’Alene cremation center—each family will keep an urn at home to honor the girls' lifelong bond.  KHQ
  • Late Rotarian Paul Anderson was posthumously honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award Friday during a ceremony in Coeur d’Alene that included the dedication of a bench near Tubbs Hill at McEuen Park. His long service leading the local Rotary Club and starting the Rose Sale fundraiser was remembered by his wife Sandy Hall — who said he was the best father and grandfather.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local family-owned businesses Lake Creek Comfort and Lake Creek Painting & Coatings have volunteered to restore Fort Sherman Chapel in Coeur d’Alene, the region’s oldest building built in 1880 and now on the National Register — their project uses donated labor, materials, and Rodda Paint’s contributions to safeguard a vital piece of local history.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Whitney Dudley, a Post Falls native and mother of three, was named executive director of Growing the STEM— a nonprofit that offers free afterschool STEM programs in Coeur d’Alene public schools. She will lead initiatives using high school coaches to mentor young students and serve over 950 students.  Coeur d'Alene Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Idaho residents can choose or switch their health insurance plans on Your Health Idaho’s exchange since open enrollment started Wednesday and will run until Dec. 15; premiums are expected to rise by 75% next year if enhanced tax credits expire—prompting many to shop early to avoid steep costs.  Coeur d'Alene Press

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • As fall sets in, gardeners in Post Falls are advised to prune perennials such as hostas, peonies, daylilies, bee balm, bearded iris, catmint, and garden phlox after the first frost to prevent disease and boost spring growth—dividing crowded plants can also help rejuvenate them. Evergreen perennials and flowering shrubs that bloom on old wood should be left untouched to continue providing winter food and habitat for wildlife.  Coeur d'Alene Press
