COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local Idaho food bank served a record number of clients as community need grew—rising donations and volunteer support helped reach this milestone. The organization reported that plans to expand services will continue in the coming weeks.  KXLY
  • The Friends of the Coeur d’Alene Trails Association ended the 2025 biking season by donating $500 each to five groups that support local trail communities — Wallace Food Bank, Shoshone County Food Bank, Mullan Community Foundation, Silver Valley Meals on Wheels and the St. Maries Food Bank. Trails rep Rick Shaffer said the donations show the nonprofit's commitment to the communities that keep these biking routes vibrant.  Coeur d'Alene Press

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Panhandle Symphony Orchestra will perform its fall concert on November 18 at Lake City High School—doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7 p.m.—with conductor Tim Sandford selecting a program of familiar classical pieces and movie music like that from Jurassic Park. The performance will also feature works such as Danse Macabre and celebrated arias by Puccini.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • At Lake City Playhouse, art director Brooke Wood says friendly spirits cause lights to flicker and voices to be heard in a dark hallway—staff light the ghost light nightly to welcome the unseen performers. Paranormal experts recently investigated the historic venue and reported encounters with multiple spirits that add to its lively past.  Coeur d'Alene Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Idaho College made significant progress in fixing issues flagged by accreditors during an October campus review, a new 17-page report said. College leaders confirmed improved leadership and staff retention—changes that set a positive course ahead of a January review.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • Lakeland High School won $25,000 and took fourth place in T-Mobile's Friday Night 5G Lights Competition, which ran from late September until Oct. 24. The funds will help repair the stadium (including improved accessibility) and upgrade the concession stands (with new goal posts).  Coeur d'Alene Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers from Friends of the River Coalition pulled nearly 4,000 pounds of old tires from a 100-yard area near the Cataldo Boat Launch along the Coeur d’Alene River — marking their largest haul since 2001. Founder Dawn Wiksten said the tires, likely left by old logging practices and floods from an unregulated dump, can hurt fish habitats and river users, and the group plans to return to clean the area further.  Coeur d'Alene Press

  • The Idaho Department of Labor will host a hiring event at the Coeur d'Alene Library on November 5 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.—job seekers can meet with local companies including Coeur d'Alene Public Schools and Hyatt Place to explore various positions. The free event also counts as one work search action for unemployment insurance purposes.  KXLY
  • At Thursday's Lakes Commission meeting, University of Idaho professors Steven Peterson and Timothy Nadreau discussed a study on how Lake Pend Oreille water levels affect regional tourism and recreation—data from water levels since 1980 shows that about 35% of Bonner County income comes from these activities, a finding that may guide future decisions by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Coeur d'Alene Press
  • The Idaho Transportation Department announced that the eastbound off-ramp on I-90 near Cataldo will close starting Monday morning for a bridge replacement and is expected to remain closed for at least three weeks depending on weather and progress—drivers should use the Kingston Exit to return to I-90 westbound for access to Cataldo. A new eastbound bridge is projected to open before Thanksgiving if conditions remain favorable.  KXLY
